Clinical Observation in Children who Had Cardiomegaly on the Chest X-Ray Without Cardiac Murmur

Abstract

|
44 cases of children with cardiomegaly on the chest X-ray and absence of cardiac murmur who were admitted to Dept of Pediatrics of Kyung Hee Medical Center, from May 1988 to May 1993 were analysed and were investigated by Doppler echocardiogram.
We
have
studied to assess the relationship between the cases (cardiomegaly without cardiac murmur) and heart diseases. And, the following results were obtained.
1) We found heart diseases in 21 out of 44 cases (48%)
2) In cases with 50~55% of cardiothoracic ratio, almost all have had no structural heart diseases.
3) Before 2 year of age, the possibillity to have organic heart diseases was increased espially in the cases with symptoms and signs associated with heart diseases-dyspnea, chest discomfort, irritability and poor feeding-or, with the
cardiothoracic
ratio more the than 60%. Most of the cases were likely to have had congenital heart diseases.
4) After 2 year of age, the possibility to have organic heart diseases was also increases in the cases with symptoms and signs associated with heart disease-dyspnea, chest discomfort irritability and poor feeding-or, with the cardiothoracic
ratio
more
than 55%. Most of the cases were likely to have had acquired heart diseases.
